Why does China Consider India to be an Enemy?
Due to the blundering Nehruvian policy of giving refuge to the Dalai Lama in India followed by the bungling of the Aksai Chin dispute, India and China fought a war in 1962. The acrimony has not been completely washed off, even after 40 years.
But are there any fundamental reasons why India and China have to remain at best distrusting neighbours? China is today covertly (and was till off late overtly) friendly with the Pakistanis. This despite the problems between the Ughirs and the Han Chinese in Xinjiang or what the Ughirs call Chinese Turkestan.
Remember the Chinese War with the Arab Muslims on the Talas River in 740
In 740, The Tang chinese army was defeated at Talas river by the Arabs This opened up Central Asia to Islam and created the problem that exists today between the Ughirs and the Chinese.
India is the last buffer between China and the Islamic Jihad.
But just come to think of it, had India been totally converted to Islam and had there been no buffer between China and the Muslim world; then would Chinese policy been pro Pakistan (and indirectly pro Islam). No way. Since then China instead of India, would be facing the Muslim world. The entire Chinese Western frontier would then be facing Islamic Jihadis as a part of China in fact does today. Although it does only in a small portion of its Western border in Xinjiang, that in itself creates a lot of trouble for the Chinese. A few years back there was a bomb blast in the Chinese Capital itself, Beijing, that was trigerred off by Islamic terrorists. At that time the Chinese Govt had issued a notification to all citizens to be on the lookout for those who appeared to be bearded troublemakers looking like Muslims. This is not the end of the story of Muslim disturbances in China. They will grow in the future.
India and China should forget the past enmity and join hands against the Islamic Jihad
In the context of all this the Chinese need to think deeply, if they stand to gain in the long run by helping the Pakistanis develop Missiles, and nuclear devices, that would be used against Chinese by the Muslim Jihadis, after and if the overcome India. India is the last buffer between China and the Islamic Jihad.
It is high time that the Chinese did some basic thinking and revised their foreign policy vis-à-vis India and the Islamic world, especially the frontier Muslim state of Pakistan. On its part India should join the Shanghai Five group of nations of which China and Russia are a part.
