The Case for an Indo-American Alliance (Part -2)
Can India learn from Russia's move for a common missile defense shield (Son of Star Wars) mooted by the USA?
According to the BBC "Reading the signs, there are some in the US defence community who would not be at all surprised if the United States, Russia and Europe agreed to build a joint defence shield against possible missile attack from rogue countries."
"It would mean that missiles would be launched that would fly to the edge of space and intercept incoming nuclear-armed missiles launched from so-called "rogue" countries.
It could also mean that the most powerful computers in the world, the battle-management computers operated by the US military, would be working to protect Russians and possibly Europeans as well." The question is protection from whom? The answer lies in what the BBC says further;
"The USA and Russia are jointly building a space station in Earth orbit and soon they could be doing what was once unthinkable - building a joint system to protect against nuclear ballistic missiles", coming from rogue countries like Iraq, Iran and North Korea.
Are we in India taking cue from what is in the minds of our friend and ally the Russians?
They no longer live in the Cold War era and have revised their ideas as to who their enemies are. Their solution to the problems created by the "bandits" of Chechnya is well known. Can we Indians do something similar in Kashmir? Can we Indians also revise the idea of who is a threat to India and who can help us?
Can we also think of joining a broad anti-terrorism alliance against the "rogue states"?
Can we also at least think and talk about being a part of the common missile defense shield mooted by the USA and Russia?
Can we ever open our minds to the unorthodox and upto now unthinkable idea of an Indo-American Military Alliance
The point is CAN WE Indians do this?
